Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the early candidates in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's ten-game without a victory beginning to the Premier League season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the team - are among the names to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible hurdle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton head coach - who made over a century of appearances for Wolves during his playing career - is considered a leading contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they begin the search of appointing a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by the club in the previous winter.
The former West Ham player is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
