Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 others were hurt in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters approached the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals got detained at the scene and another man who ran away after the blast was found shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.

The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location revealed the building turned into a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member caused the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

He believed the explosion had taken place on a floor above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants informed Italian media, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
