Pacific Bluefin Fish Sells for Historic Price of $3.2 million at Tokyo New Year Sale
A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages restaurants throughout Japan and overseas.
"The year's tuna heralds good luck," stated the business owner, a notable bidder at the yearly first sale.
Known as the Tuna King, this businessman is renowned for placing substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent
Following the auction, the winner informed reporters that he was "astonished at the final price," stating, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price escalated rapidly."
This latest acquisition exceeds his previous notable purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite previously commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record yet again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously known for exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries across Japan.
The high-energy energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
From Auction to Plate
The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter processed for customers at the winner's sushi establishments shortly after the auction concluded.
"I sense like I've commenced the year in a good way after eating something so lucky as the year begins," shared one happy patron.
